Satellite Photos of Hurricane Georges

Image - This is a composite of three channels from the AVHRR instrument aboard a NOAA polar orbiting satellite showing Hurricane Georges as it made landfall in Puerto RicoThis is a composite of three channels from the AVHRR (Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer) instrument aboard a NOAA polar orbiting satellite. It is a combination of visible and infrared sensors. Clouds that are yellow are low, while the white and bluish colored clouds are high. The McIDAS (Man computer Interactive Data Access System), developed at the Space Science and Engineering Center, was used to ingest and process the satellite data.  Image is from 19:45 p.m., September 21, 1998, Greenwich Mean Time (or 3:45 p.m. September 21, 1998 local time). File obtained from the Space Science and Engineering Center of the University of Wisconsin at "http://www.ssec.wisc.edu/".

Image - Infrared image from the GOES-8 satellite collected at 9:15 p.m. September 21, 1998 local time showing Hurricane Georges as the eye is over the center of Puerto Rico.Infrared image from the GOES-8 satellite for 1:15 a.m., September 22, 1998, Greenwich Mean Time (or 9:15 p.m. September 21, 1998 local time). File obtained from the Naval Research Laboratory in Monterrey, California at "http://www.nrlmry.navy.mil/".

mage - Unenhanced infrared image from the GOES-8 satellite collected at 9:15 p.m. This infrared image uses the BD enhancement curve that is standard in analysis of the very cold cloud tops for tropical cyclones.
