The
USGS Caribbean District held its First Open House to celebrate Earth Science
Week
The U.S. Geological Survey Caribbean District Office in Guaynabo, Puerto
Rico, celebrated Earth Science Week (October 10-16, 1999) with a three-day
Open House from Wednesday, October 13th through Friday, October
15th.

With the cooperation of the Puerto Rico Department of Education, sixth-
and ninth-grade students from three different schools in Cataño had the
opportunity to participate in this event. During the three days,
the Caribbean District Office received a total of 65 students and 4 teachers
from "Onofre Caballeira", "José A. Nieves", and "Mercedes
García Colorado" public schools.

Students had the opportunity to attend two short conferences-- (1) discussion
of the USGS mission as a scientific agency and an overview of the hydrologic
cycle, as well as water use and water resources in Puerto Rico; and (2)
a tour of the office facilities, including its three different laboratories,
and a visit with a demonstration to the meteorological station located
at the office backyard.
The USGS
Caribbean District Office is proud to say that the event was a success
and is planning to continue celebrating Earth Science Week in future years
with similar activities so that students can learn more about the agency's
mission and its work.
The USGS
provides the Nation with reliable, impartial information to describe and
understand the Earth. This information is used to minimize loss
of life and property from natural disasters; manage water, biological,
energy, and mineral resources; enhance and protect the quality of life;
and contribute to wise economic and physical development.
