Geological Survey and On May 9 the President of the University of Puerto Rico, Dr. Norman Maldonado, and the Director of the U.S. Geological Survey, Dr. Charles G. Groat, signed a memorandum of understanding to foster cooperation and interchange between the two institutions. The objective of the agreement is to enhance collaborative efforts in scientific research, faculty exchange, and student internships between UPR students and faculty and USGS scientists. The agreement will provide for the coordination of research, data inventories, monitoring, and data exchange in the Earth and natural sciences including natural hazards, geology, hydrology, remote sensing, mapping, and biological studies in the Caribbean region. This will facilitate the exchange of faculty and students for research in the fields of management and interpretation of natural resources and hazards. The USGS is the nation's largest water, earth and biological science, and civilian mapping agency. The USGS works in cooperation with more than 2000 organizations across the country to provide reliable, impartial, scientific information to resource managers, planners, and other customers. The information is gathered in every state by USGS scientists to minimize the loss of life and property from natural disasters, to contribute to the conservation and sound economic and physical development of the nation's natural resources, and to enhance the quality of life by monitoring water, biological, energy, and mineral resources. * * * USGS * * *
